“I am looking forward to studying RNA structure and function in the Kieft lab! I have used cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study the structure and dynamics of membrane protein transporters and am excited to apply my knowledge to the world of RNA. Specifically, I am interested in how viral RNAs elude immune response through structured elements. I plan on using cryo-EM to understand specific resistance mechanisms of exoribonuclease-resistant RNAs. I also hope to identify and study novel RNAs from viral genera that inhibit endoribonuclease L (RNase L) activity in infected hosts.”

Samantha has an affinity toward musical theater except for “Cats”. She calls it trash. She is originally from Arizona and hates the snow which is problematic living in Colorado. She also has a sixth sense for celebrity gossip. She enjoys crafting, sewing, knitting, and long walks on the beach.
